At PASCAL Primary School Lemesos we have introduced Design and Technology lessons in the Curriculum of Year 5 and Year 6 pupils.
Through creativity and imagination, pupils design and create items that solve problems in the real world. Design and Technology is a practical and valuable subject. It encourages children to draw on their mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art skills. It also enables pupils and young people to actively contribute to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of themselves as well as their community and their nation. It teaches pupils how to take risks and also how to become more resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable.
During their Design and Technology lessons in February, March and April, Year 5 and Year 6 pupils took part in a workshop in mosaic design with artist Mrs. Sotia Yiangou along with their Design and Technology teachers. Our pupils learnt how to design and make a mosaic using glass tiles. They created both individual pieces and a collaborative piece with the theme “Cypriot culture and traditions.” All the aforementioned, in line with the Year 5 and Year 6 curriculum, enhanced our pupils’ concentration levels and encouraged collaboration as well as creativity.
Procedure: Pupils met with Mrs. Sotia Yiangou where they discussed ideas about Cyprus, its culture and traditions. These ideas were then illustrated by the pupils and given to Mrs. Sotia Yiangou. The mosaic that the pupils created reflects the pupils’ ideas. This mosaic is a permanent fixture at the front entrance of the school.
